Day 7: Rinse and repeat

Monday, June 10, 2013

So by now, I think it's pretty obvious what my schtick is:

1. Take hospital meal

2. Add fruit and/or fresh veg

3. Voila!

So I'll spare you the pictures for today. Plus its such a gloomy day outside... hard to motivate myself to do anything today.

I also was the very lucky recipient of a wonderful Whole Foods lunch brought to me by my kind friend Sheela, so I really can't complain about the quality of my meals today.

But, as a helpful guide for anyone who finds themselves in a similar long-stay hospital situation, here's what's in my fridge and pantry and what I would recommend packing:

FRIDGE

1. Fresh berries-- these go along way to perking up breakfast, dessert, snacks

2. Baby carrots and hummus

3. Cheese! I loooooove cheese. The cheese they serve here in sandwiches is NOT cheese. It's plastic and playdough disguised as cheese. So I BYOC.

4. Yoghurt. Jello is in abundance here, but no yoghurt.

5. Grapes

6. Cut up watermelon (thank you Sue!)

7. About 10 milkettes. Story here-- I get a standard issue "milkette" with every meal. It's slightly smaller than your average school lunch milk and always 2%. I don't drink milk. Pour it in my (decaf) coffee or my cereal, but never straight up. So I hoard them for my daughter when she visits. Over the course of the next 5 weeks, I will have amassed 105 milkettes.

PANTRY

1. Fresh tomatoes-- I slice them into sandwiches or add to salads along with the carrots

2. Avocado- everything goes with avocado

3. Mangos-- I'm half-Filipina. Mangos are a staple food. Fresh, dried, sweet, salty, ripe, unripe--we eat the mango.

4. Apples. I'm also half-Anglo-Whitey. Apples taste good.

5. Bananas. Everyone likes bananas.

4. Granola, granola bars. Yummy snacks

5. Roasted almonds. More yummy snacks.

6. Montreal bagels.

Things to bring from home (for food prep and general enjoyment):

1. A small paring knife (the metal knives that come with meals are super dull. I've squashed many tomatoes beyond recognition trying to slice with the hospital knives)

2. Some Tupperware and ziplock baggies for storing any snacks or leftovers

3. A microwavable plate or bowl

4. A water bottle (styrofoam cups are provided, but feels wrong to keep using and throwing away. Plus, they don't hold that much water)

5. Thermal mug or container for hot beverages like tea or coffee

Day 6: 'Roid Rage

Over the course of a couple days, I received two shots of antenatal steroids-- Celestone, to be specific-- delivered right to my backside....
